MSDP Modules

This testing program consists of seven modules, each with its specific requirements and methods of evaluation. Upon successful completion of all seven modules, a certificate will be awarded and the participant will be allowed to use that designation in his/her business.

All evaluators are carefully screened and approved by the MSDP Board of Directors. Anonymous evaluations will be conducted on all modules except Fit, which will be juried in person by a three member evaluation team, and Business Practices which will be evaluated by a Business Professional outside of the Association of Sewing and Design Professionals.  Applicants will be assigned an identification number to be on all submissions.  The evaluators will not know whose work they are evaluating and the applicants will not be aware of who is evaluating their work.

Please note this is a summary of the modules and does not include all the requirements of the program. Upon being accepted into the program, you will receive a notebook with all the detailed information and requirements of the program.

This module covers fabric characteristics and how they affect apparel design and the way in which they are used in garments.

This module is intended for the candidate who is prepared to:

  • Perform a “burn test” for a minimum of eight (8) fabrics to prepare for the test
  • Understand the properties, potential sewing challenges, and performance of both woven and knit fabrics
  • Identify specific fabric types most appropriate for specific types of sewing projects
  • Choose appropriate lining and interfacing for specific sewing projects
  • Complete a comprehensive online test

DESIGN

This module focuses on line, shape, texture, proportion, balance, symmetry/asymmetry and scale found in the elements of design and how to complement, highlight or visually alter these elements in a person’s attire.

This module is intended for the candidate who is prepared to:

  • Understand body types, proportions, symmetry/asymmetry and scale, “Golden Mean”, flatter/camouflage contours, (among other things)
  • Relate scale to prints and accessories, identify balance points
  • Present a notebook with photographs of 3 people with different body types. Analyze their body types, determine flattering design choices for them in written observations, sketches and or clippings
  • Notebook may be submitted as hard copy (mailed) or electronic version.

This module focuses on fashion illustration, the ability to quickly and accurately sketch ideas, for the purpose of building a portfolio and communicating ideas to your clients with developed garment sketches.  Using classes, books and/or the resources listed in the suggested texts, you should be able to demonstrate your understanding of body-drawing styles.

This module is intended for the candidate who is prepared to:

  • Submit basic drawings of a list of design details (sleeve types, collars, belt loops etc.) provided to you.
  • Submit 5 drawings of original work on your own or others croquis
  • Drawings may be combined in a single or multiple drawings, on full or partial bodies, and may be traced.
  • Must be drawn freehand.
  • A specific list of design details will be provided.
  • All samples will be mailed in for evaluation.

This module covers correct fit with a hands-on (in person) evaluation. It is based on the text Fitting and Pattern Alteration: A Multi Method Approach by Elizabeth L. Liechty, Della N. Pottberg and Judith A. Rasband.

This module is intended for the candidate who is prepared to:

  • Create a dress and pant muslin sloper from measurements sent to you from Director of Operations (6 weeks prior to evaluation).
  • Be prepared to fine tune the fit on your live model whose measurements were provided to you (MSDP will provide model)
  • Answer questions from 3 evaluators while you fit
  • Document with photographs and written description the following:
    • Create muslin sloper using either your own method or a commercial pattern
    • Use slash and spread method to adjust a pattern for correct fit.
  • Samples will be mailed in for evaluation.
  • Take on-line test on correct fit and terminology.

This module includes sewing techniques for creating high quality garments. Mastery of the required elements may be achieved via classes, internet or distance learning courses, texts, DVDs, independent research and life experience.

This module is intended for the candidate who is prepared to:

  • Construct a minimum of four garments that incorporate the specific techniques listed. Submit one jacket, one blouse, one slacks and one other garment of your choice.
  • One must be made of blouse-weight silk or silk-like fabric.
  • Garments may include more than one technique.
  • Techniques that cannot pleasingly be incorporated into the garments must be submitted as samples.
  • Approximately 60 techniques covered plus proper use of interfacings.
  • Garments and samples will be mailed in for evaluation.

Apparel professionals need a foundation of knowledge and skills to develop flat patterns for use in garment construction. To achieve this end, professionals first need a basic understanding of fabric structure and grainlines; and secondly, an understanding of the various methods for approaching the pattern-making process.

This module covers methods for creating a full-size flat pattern for garment construction.

This module is intended for the candidate who is prepared to:

Create a full-size flat pattern for garment construction including the following:

  • drafting from body measurements
  • use of a body block or sloper
  • draping of fabric to create a toile using a dress form or client’s body
  • enlarging a half-scale pattern
  • copying, or “knocking off” an existing garment
  • After achieving a basic flat pattern, the refining of the pattern and the ability to add other basic garment components are skills that are necessary for competence in this area. Pattern refinements include truing seams, adding fit and wearing ease, adding seam and hem allowances, and the incorporation of pattern symbols and labels.  Basic garment components to be added include, for example, facings.
  • Patterns will be mailed in for evaluation

Writing and using a business plan is a critical component of a successful business. Careful planning is fundamental to operating efficiently, effectively and profitably.

  • Write and submit a comprehensive business plan using a list of approximately 35 key items/issues, which must be addressed
  • Include Business cards, brochures and flyers
  • Samples of advertising including links to online media pages and newspaper and yellow page ads if applicable
  • Copies of your business policies and/or contracts you use with clients
  • Photos of your client space and a written explanation of how that presents the image you describe in your business plan.

  • Business plan and supporting documentation will be evaluated by a business professional not associated with the Association of Sewing and Design Professionals.
  • Plan will be mailed to evaluator
