Master Sewing and Design Professional Certification Legacy Policy
Fees for Legacy into MSDP are the same as for MSDP participants
- $1500 for non-ASDP Members
- $1000 for ASDP Members
The following are the required five areas of documentation that you must provide in order to be considered for Legacy into the MSDP certification program.
- 1-2 page essay on “Why I Am Qualified for MSDP Certification”.
- Minimum length of years in business: 15 years full time or 20 years part time.
- Qualifying Continuing Education Experience.
- A minimum of 1500 points must be accrued.
- All activities must be directly related to and consistent with the knowledge base of the sewing and design professions.
- Evidence or documentation of these activities should be included in an electronic form such as a pdf file. Do not send hard copies or originals.
- Activities that qualify for professional development points and the eligible number of points earned for each activity for the MSDP Legacy certification are outlined on the Professional Development List.
- Professional References.
- Quantity: 3 references from clients
- Quantity: 3 references from professional business associates, peer or colleague affiliations, former students.
- Please provide a 1 page explanation of why these people are appropriate for your references.
- Portfolio of Work
- Required: 1 page introductory summary of the content and significance of your portfolio.
- Photographs of 15 designs, fully made by you, that represent your body of work. No alterations, outsourced/collaborative work, or rearrangement of existing garments will be accepted.
- A minimum of 5 photographs of clients in their clothing (may be more than one photograph per design) The rest can be photographs on dress forms.
- Please provide a CD or a link of your photographs. Do not send a hard copy.
Optional Categories to submit in your portfolio:
This is additional information that the committee can review but is not required.
- Documentation of participation in professional shows. Send CD or link in written support.
- Document certificates of recognition (such as ASDP Chapter evaluation certification).
- Document awards, press and professional recognition.
MSDP Certifying Committee
All professionals applying for Legacy who submit a completed application will have their qualifications reviewed by a committee of 4 current board members of the Master Sewing and Design Professional Certification board of directors. Please allow 4-6 weeks after receipt of application for notification. The certification fee is due upon mailing in the application.
MSDP Certification Maintenance Requirements
Master Sewing and Design Professionals are required to complete twenty (20) points of continuing education coursework (CEU’s) every year, to be reported annually on December 31. Payment of the annual maintenance fee, which is currently $35 is also due by December 31.
