MAS Legacy Program Requirements

Master Sewing and Design Professional Certification Legacy Policy

Fees for Legacy into MSDP are the same as for MSDP participants

  • $1200 for non-ASDP Members
  • $800 for ASDP Members

The following are the required five areas of documentation that you must provide in order to be considered for Legacy into the MAS certification program.

  1. 1-2 page essay on “Why I Am Qualified for MAS Certification”.
  2. Minimum length of years in business: 15 years full time or 20 years part time.
  3. Qualifying Continuing Education Experience.
    • A minimum of 1200 points must be accrued.
    • All activities must be directly related to and consistent with the knowledge base of the sewing and design professions.
    • Evidence or documentation of these activities should be included in an electronic form such as a pdf file. Do not send hard copies or originals.
    • Activities that qualify for professional development points and the eligible number of points earned for each activity for the MAS Legacy certification are outlined on the Professional Development List.
  4. Professional References.
    • Quantity: 3 references from clients
    • Quantity: 3 references from professional business associates, peer or colleague affiliations, former students.
    • Please provide a 1 page explanation of why these people are appropriate for your references.
  5. Skill Samples
    • Photographs of at least 3 poorly fitting garments on a client and photographs of the same garment after the alterations were completed. These should show the front and back of at least 3 different alterations. Please describe the fitting issues and how you resolved them.

-Please provide a CD or link of your photographs. Do not send hard copy.

    • Name your 3 favorite fashion and design resources.
    • Answer the following essay questions
      1.   How do you approach a fitting issue when it’s obvious that a garment is too small (i.e. can’t be zipped up and leaves a considerable gap)?
      2. Describe the difference between taking in the waist and hip of women’s vs. men’s pants. Please included the thinking process behind this.
      3. How would you answer the question “How much do you charge for this alteration?” Please include the reasons for your answer.
      4. How do you handle a client who expresses extreme dissatisfaction with the outcome of an alteration? Please include the reasons for your answer.
      5. Define your business ethics as it applies to your alteration business?
      6. How has your business evolved over the past XX years?
        • Has your business changed direction from the day you established it?
        • If you could go back 10 years, what would be the one decision you would change or decision you should have made that would have improved your business?
        • How do you see your business 5 years from now?

MAS Certifying Committee

All professionals applying for Legacy who submit a completed application will have their qualifications reviewed by a committee of 4 current board members of the Master Sewing and Design Professional Certification board of directors.  Please allow 4-6 weeks after receipt of application for notification. The certification fee is due upon mailing in the application.

MAS Certification Maintenance Requirements

Master Alteration Specialists are required to complete Fifteen (15) points of continuing education coursework (CEU’s) every year, to be reported annually on December 31.  Payment of the annual maintenance fee, which is currently $35 is also due by December 31.
